    Existing Email Addresses

Can I keep my existing email address?

The TalkTalk Business broadband service is compatible with all other email providers and email clients. However your email address may effectively be owned by another provider. You will need to seek confirmation from your current email provider whether their email service is tied to your broadband (or other) service.

Can I keep my existing webmail email address?

  • If you have a webmail email account that is not tied to your broadband service then this will continue to function on the TalkTalk Business broadband service.
  • Providers of webmail such as Yahoo, Google or Hotmail provide a service that is designed to be completely independent of service provider. These email accounts will work with any provider.
  • If however your webmail account is provided by your broadband provider (for example BT or Orange) then you will need to contact your provider to ascertain whether you will be able to keep your existing email address.

  • My email address is with my current broadband provider, can I continue using that?

The TalkTalk Business broadband service allows you to use any email account, be it a TalkTalk Business email address or not. Your email address will be one of two types:

  • Either it will be owned by your provider in which case the “domain” part of the email will identify your broadband provider (e.g. thecookshop@btconnect.com, woodjoinery@virgin.net ). In this instance it is likely your broadband provider will cease your email address when your broadband is cancelled unless you contact them prior to the cancellation.
  • Or you will have a domain (see below) for your company that is being held by your broadband provider. In this situation you will likely have a website made up of the second half of your email address (e.g. sales@thecookshop.co.uk and www.thecookshop.co.uk respectively). In this situation you must ensure that your provider knows you are only cancelling your broadband and not your domain and email service.
  • Alternatively, TalkTalk Business offers a fully managed and easy to use domain hosting and email solution. More information is available through TalkTalk Business Sales on 0800 083 3999.

  • I don’t want to change my current email address. What are my options?

If your email address is tied to your broadband service and you cannot change your email address you should not change your broadband service. We would urge you to contact your provider though; in many cases the email address is actually tied to an original dial up account and these very rarely have any restrictions.

Over the long term we would strongly recommend obtaining a domain and using that for your email. With your own domain you will be able to transfer all of your facilities (separately) between whichever provider you choose.

    Domains

    What is a domain?

  • A domain is a web address. In essence it is an address on the internet to uniquely identify your company or product.
  • A domain is used to point emails to your business and to point web browsers to your website.

  • What is the benefit of a domain?

Once you have a domain it has two primary uses, firstly as the identifier for a website, secondly as the identifier for emails. TalkTalk Business can arrange domain registration, email and web hosting as part of a package.

  • Increasingly consumers are using the internet as their first point of reference when searching for goods and services. In the same way that a memorable name and pleasing shop front can entice customers, so can a well formed domain and well designed website.

  • Troubleshooting

After transferring to TalkTalk Business I can receive email on my existing email address but I cannot send, what can I do?

  • When changing broadband supplier it is often necessary to update your outgoing mail server from your previous supplier to ourselves.
  • You will need to change your Outgoing Mail Server (most likely it is smtp.your_old_provider.co.uk) to smtp.talktalkbusiness.net. This will allow you to send emails.
  • There are guides available within this support section to help you reconfigure the most popular email clients – see top of page.
  • Should you have any trouble finding this setting on your email client please don’t hesitate to call our Technical Support team on 0800 083 3003.

  • After transferring to TalkTalk Business I cannot receive email on my existing email address, what can I do?

On the assumption that you are able to browse web pages, this could be caused by one of two things:

  • It could be that you cannot send emails and have an email waiting to be sent. On some email clients this will prevent emails being received. In this situation follow the steps involved in being unable to send.
  • Alternatively if you are getting a login error it is possible that your email provider has cancelled your email account. We would recommend you contact your old provider with a view to getting it reinstated or alternatively create an alternative TalkTalk Business email address.
